What Is the Alliance for a Toxic-Free Future?
The Alliance for a Toxic-Free Future is a non-partisan collaboration comprised of environmental, labor, environmental justice, academic, health, community, faith-based, and other groups working together for a future in which our children are not exposed to toxic chemicals. These are groups that have not traditionally worked together, united by the recognition that by joining forces, we can capitalize on global efforts to ensure the lives we lead and materials we use are safe for our children and do not leave a toxic legacy for generations to come. The guiding principles of the Alliance are articulated in the Safer Chemicals Charter, a platform for creating a safe and healthy environment in New York, modeled after the Louisvile and Copenhagen Charters.
The Alliance was formed in the fall of 2004 with a goal of reforming chemicals policy so that the threat of toxic chemical exposure becomes a thing of the past. Since then, it has grown to include over seventy environmental health, environmental justice, labor, academic, faith-based, health-affected and community groups. The Alliance created six taskforces to win specific policy reforms that fit their respective of areas of focus, and build awareness, champions, and collective strength necessary to launch a more comprehensive chemical reform policy. Each taskforce has six co-leaders.
