Projects: Introduction
In working towards our goal of precautionary chemical policy reform, the Alliance has chosen six priority environmental health initiatives for 2007. They include the following:
- Proposed Executive Order and funding for a statewide Pollution Prevention Institute to assist businesses in implementing comprehensive pollution prevention programs;
- Proposed Executive Order and funding for a Green Chemistry Institute to conduct research and demonstration projects to design safer chemicals;
- Proposed Executive Order to establish a Safe and Sustainable Procurement policy requiring all state agencies to purchase sustainable products and services and implement a plan to phase out the use of products and services with priority toxic chemicals (based on health criteria such as known carcinogens, etc.);
- Establishment of a statewide network of Children’s Environmental Health Clinics to adequately diagnose and treat children harmed by environmental health hazards;
- Proposed Executive Order to establish an Environmental Justice policy for New York State; and
- Conduct a statewide publicity campaign to publicize the opportunity for all 9/11 workers and volunteers exposed to toxic dust to register with the NYS Workers Compensation program by August 2007 to protect their rights if they suffer from an illness in the future.
